The Academic Decathlon is a team competition where students match their intellect with other teams.  Students would be tested in five categories:  English - Speaking Skills, Mathematics, Science, Geography, and General awareness – related concepts. This competition is aimed to promote academic excellence, logical and high order thinking skills, and collaborative spirit and co-operative learning skills.

Rules:

5 levels:

  • General Awareness Round – It will be a verbal quiz. The teams will be asked 10 questions and the team that rings the buzzer first will be given a chance to answer. The correct answer will be awarded with 1 point each. There is no negative marking in this round. Score of this round will be carried forward to the next round. The time duration for this round will be approximately 10 minutes.

 

  • Mathematics Round – this will be a written round wherein 10 age – appropriate questions would be asked related to Mathematics. The time duration for this round would be 10 minutes. The teams will have to solve the questions provided on the sheet of paper and submit the answers within the stipulated time. The team which submits the sheet after the time limit, will be given negative marking (-1 per minute of late submission). The marks which the teams obtain in this round will be carried forward to the next round.

 

  • Geography Round – This round will be based on the world map. The teams will be asked 5 questions wherein the teams will be asked to mark places on a world map. The teams will be provided with blank maps for the same. The marks which the teams obtain in this round will be carried forward to the next round.

 

  • Science Round – This round is a model-making round using building blocks. Each team would be building a model of their dream vehicle using the building blocks provided by the school. The time duration for this round would be 20 minutes. The model would be judged on the basis of neatness, creativity, team co-ordination, design of the vehicle and overall presentation.

 

  • English – Speaking Skills Round – This ‘Spinning the Yarn’ Round is more about creativity and quick-thinking skills of the students. In this round, each team would be given an opening line/phrase. They would have to build a story with it. Each participant will have to participate in this round and be a part of the story telling. They will be given 1 minute to prepare and think. Then, they will be given 3 minutes for their presentation. The teams would be judged on their creativity, fluency/spontaneity, conclusion of the story, originality, appropriate length, clarity and expression.

 

Judgment Criteria:

  • Every child’s participation is a must in the team.

Each round’s marks would be carried forward and then the cumulative total score would be calculated to choose the winner.

General Rules

  • A student can participate in any two competitions and two workshops.   
  • Each participant and accompanying non-participant/s should carry a valid school identity card for inspection at the registration counter. You will be expected to produce your school/college identity card for inspection whenever asked to do so. 
  • The individual/team should report to the Event Coordinator at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time of the event. 
  • Any kind of weapon/s, sharp and objectionable objects and paraphernalia will be confiscated on the spot. 
  • Unruly behaviour, violence, offensive language, smoking on the premises and possession and use of abusive substances will lead to immediate disqualification of the entire contingent of the particular school from which the offending students are. 
  • The time limit for each competition must be adhered to. In case of noncompliance 
  • with the rules, points will be deducted for exceeding the time limit. 
  • The organizers of Viva reserve the right to admission, which may be revoked at any point of time without prior notice. 
  • The organizers reserve the right to alter the rules of any event. 
  • Please refer to the details given regarding grades, date, time and venue of the events. 
  • The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all. 
  • The points will be awarded as follows: 

Individual Event: 

1st Place = 5 

2nd Place = 3 

3rd Place = 1 

Team/Pair Event: 

1st Place = 10 

2nd Place = 7

The Overall Winners and Runners Up will be declared on the day of Viva Grand Finale on 17th December 2023.  

Separate forms should be sent for each competition, workshop and sports event. Please refer to the forms given. 

No ‘on the spot’ entries will be accepted. 

Entries to competitions will be accepted on a ‘first come first served’ basis. 

No refund will be provided.  

Age Limit: Participation is open to all students from Pre-Primary to Junior College. 

All winners will receive awards in the form of certificates and trophies.
